Lighthouse Apartments Part 1 Project 2003 Entoine Tran Curtin University Perth | Australia Following the East Perth Redevelopment Scheme and given the location, Lighthouse Apartments was envisaged to potentially become an iconic beacon - reuniting the East Perth and Gateway community with the heart of city. Promoting individuality, the project needed to break from the typology of “honeycombed” apartment buildings and through the use of colour and light in collaboration with form, and with the dichotomy between internal and external spaces, it seemed achievable. Internal apartments were approached as “liveable galleries”, blurring the boundary between interior and exterior spaces, allowing small volumes to be extended and immersing apartment dwellers into their inner-city setting. Entoine Tran Set in an area of urban residential renewal on a prominent site at the eastern end of the city, this design project makes a well considered transformation of an existing inward-looking, late 1960’s government office building into a designed collection of distinct apartment types. Tran illustrates his combined understanding and command of the holistic design of the building’s exterior presence, its interior spatial sequence and composition and the creative adaptation of the existing building plan and section for the provision of many possibilities for apartment living. An admirable level of refinement of the spatial and utilitarian needs of one specific developed apartment type is evident in this project.
