Waterloo Edge City Part 2 Project 2005 Jaime LivingstonLutz Atitié University of Bath | UK Our proposal investigates how to achieve density through the intensification of an existing context. By backfilling against the edge of Waterloo Station 1,000,000 ft of speculative mixed-use development is added without clearing the urban texture and established community of Lower Marsh. The towers form seeks to balance the impacts of a local footprint through a raised ground connecting with the station; and a regional skyline through a dynamic contrast of scale. The facades of punctured OSB walls behind expanded metal screens vary once with internal use and again through the individual opening and closing of the screens. Jaime LivingstonLutz Atitié In the London Plan, Waterloo is identified as an Area of Opportunity. It stresses the need to maximise the potential of sites, achieving plot ratios of 5:1.The year started with an interest in the implications of the current policy led push for density and proposed that projects explore the qualitative aspects of density and place. We wanted to investigate the degree to which one can push density: when is it unsustainable or unacceptable? Are there reasonable upper limits? How do we create a quality urban environment as well as a place for the individual, under these pressures?
