In a three day workshop, we collaborated with 13 year-old pupils from Castlebrae High School to design a community facility for an ideal vision of Craigmillar, an area undergoing extensive regeneration. After our conversations, it became clear that they need a place to socialise with people their own age. Whilst initial projects allowed pupils to explore their ideas for their new place, the tower armature allowed ideas to come together. We learnt a fresh perspective of the built environment and the pupils began thinking about the spaces they inhabit, each colourful model presenting an idea for a more optimistic Craigmillar.

IDEAL COMMUNITY FACILITIES –THE INFECTIOUS ENTHUSIASM OF YOUTH
A short collaborative project between architecture students and pupils from a community high school in Edinburgh.
The pupils revealed their unanimous desire for additional community facilities at specific locations focused on teenagers, which would make a difference. They communicated their ideas through drawings and words. This formed the content of a two day workshop where small models of these provocative facilities were located on a big site model. Larger models were then made to explore the internal and external nature of these facilities. The students recorded events as they unfolded and published a catalogue..
