Sailing Places Part 1 Project 2006 Matthew P Smith University of Portsmouth | UK I was inspired to create a building that would sit beside the land, clinging to it by means of visible, honest and comprehensible structure.Linear alignment and proportion were very important to me, and I have enjoyed creating architecture based upon simplistic adaptations of cubic form, logically repeated and modified to suit the particular demands of the site and function. These adaptations have continued through use of careful textural and volumetric contrasts in material choices, and in the structural details. Matthew P Smith Matt started by looking at the context of this seaside site for inspiration. He used immediate references of material and form to inspire his idea. The form works well and has been developed through material consideration and careful detailing to be a sensitive response to the site. Traditional ideas of timber construction have been translated into a modern piece of architecture on a challenging site. Matt illustrates how a student can positively engage with the design process, pulling together aspects of site analysis, an understanding of context and develop an appropriate understanding of materials to compliment an emerging idea.
