Zorrozaurre - Bilbao College of Water Sports & Technology Part 2 Project 2007 Daniel Stewart University of Plymouth | UK Bilbao College of Water Sports & Technology answers Bilbao and Zorrozaurre’s economic and cultural need to reconnect its’ inhabitants with the water. The design reflects upon the robustness, strength and simplicity intrinsic to Basque culture. Spaces around the building alternate between intimate and public, creating places of activity, intrigue and interaction that can be modified for varied usage. Public facilities promote community involvement and a visual awareness and understanding of the historic, cultural tasks and activities associated with boat construction and testing at the heart of the building. Daniel Stewart Dan engaged in an exhaustive exploration of the underlying issues, including in his analysis of the existing context and master plan. In opposition to the proposed scheme, he reconfigured the master plan to enable a greater engagement with the adjacent river, and to support the life of the river through the proposition of activities directly related to its current and historic use. His study of his proposed building was equally rigorous, particularly in his exploration of movement around, into and through the building. Equally notable was his investigation of the tectonic qualities of the fabric of the building.
