Buenos Aires, Buenas Aguas; sustainable anthropogenics

Since its origins, the configuration and development of Buenos Aires has been determined by the estuary called Río de la Plata and its course. The coast transformed its use from recreational to industrial to highways, and more recently, to housing projects. Today, this not only generates lack of activity in the coastal recreational areas, but also did not yet provide a stable solution to the river´s natural force, which stalks the city and floods it, and more seriously, has interfered with the towpath denominated “camino de Sirga”.

When Le Corbusier came in 1929, the idea of transforming the city´s waterfront begun to change its facade, but the new coastline phenomena can only be seen by sailing out-waters. Moreover, the solutions provided to confront the river´s natural force have always been limited to land filling, which would later be rigidised with a levee and sheet pile wall; a rigid barrier between city and water.

Further North from the city´s centre, the Paraná river flows depositing 100 meters of sediment a year that enlarge the estuary´s delta. If it is left to its natural course, the delta will reach downtown around year 2200.

The delta´s newer islands form ecosystems that take between 10 to 20 years to establish, creating different environments depending on the formation variations. These formations vary in a few predictable ways that have been studied, and can be semi-artificially reproduced. The construction of this anthropogenic structures can convey with the idea of urban neighbourhoods with different natural sub-environments, which can be created with the specific use of these morphogenetic variations.

Whilst converting the new coast, the project confronts a dual purpouse; to provide a controlling system against the strength of the estuary and to use the land to offer citizens areas of opportunity with differentiation of various relationships between users and the river itself. This process would also give Buenos Aires a chance to grow one fourth of its actual size, creating new, yet sustainable, urban centres.

By the time the delta reaches the front of this new formations, the rivers use would be complementary with that of the biosphere infront.



THIS PROPOSAL IS BASED ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF A NEW LANDSCAPE IN THE COAST OF THE RIO DE LA PLATA

THIS WORK IS AN EXPLORATION ABOUT THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE URBAN DENSITY AND THE PUBLIC SPACE AS A SECOND NATURE ALONG FIVE KILOMETERS OF EXTENSION OF COAST.

THE ANALYSIS OF THE CURRENT SITUATION OF THE BORDERLINES, THE GEOGRAPHICAL CONDITIONS AND THE SYSTEM OF HIGHWAYS IS THE KEY OF THE LOCALIZATION OF THE SETTLEMENTS AND THE DEFINITION OF THE DENSITIES AND THE NEW MIXED PROGRAMS.
