SSAC | Small Scale Aquaculture Center for Developing Settlements Part 2 Project 2011 Sebastian Laclabere University of Chile | Chile The main study theme with this project is the fishing industry of Chile in all its scales and types, trying to understand it’s importance in the Chilean context, both in economic and environmental terms. We study small scale fishing communities, their needs, and undeveloped potentials, we also explore the possible interactions between these activities and aquaculture, understanding that the potential connections between these two activities might generate new activities and incomes for these settlements. The Small Scale Aquaculture Center is a modular and prefabricated project, tought to be localized in small fishing towns along the north coast of Chile, mainly in the Tarapaca region. The goal of this project is to train the fishing communities and teach them how to cultivate mussels, helping them to improve their economic conditions, and at the same time allowing the natural mussel banks to be preserved and strengthened, reverting their current overexploitation.Due to the modular nature of the project and the need of being able to replicate it in various locations, the project is developed completely with laminar wood poles and beams with standard measurements, and a series of wooden blinds. This decision of working with a limited number of elements makes the project very simple and allows great flexibility, also simplifying the construction and transportation process.Keeping this as a central idea, the project focuses in developing the system in a real context, to understand the interactions between this abstract approach and a real place. The settlement chosen for this stage is a small fishing town named San Marcos, this town is located in the Tarapaca region and has a population of 150 people. The San Marcos SSCA its composed by five independent volumes, considering administrative spaces, a community hall, cultivation volumes, laboratories, a processing plant and workers services for the fishermen. Besides this the project also considers the design of the public spaces in the bay, considering a pedestrian walk and a series of plazas that articulate the different components of the system.
