Our House of Fashion Part 1 Project 2012 Monika Jociute London South Bank University | UK The master plan for East London’s Hackney Wick develops from a passion in fashion and affluent culture. Inspired by weaving, layering and reinterpreting architecture, the project extrapolates these ideas into programmatic, tectonic and environmental concerns for Hackney Wick. The Fashion Industry will be delicately implanted into the existing city fabric to revitalise a latent and vanishing economy. The approach was to create merging structures that sew the existing fabric with the new Fashion Villages, Fare Markets, Textile Production Warehouses and Public Transportation stations. The master plan aims to act as a rejuvenating device for the site both economically and socially. The design of “House of Fashion” evolves from the fascination of manipulating light and imaginative accumulated and choreographed spaces. The architecture is organised along the spine- the cat walk- and stretches into the neighbourhood and out over the canal; boundaries merge and become obscured. The scale and spaces within twist along the spine and manipulate light-fall and descent down towards the low galleries and workshops. The project celebrates fashion and the process of textiles by immersing the visitors into an architectural space of observation and interaction; environmental technologies and construction methodologies collectively evolve into the character of the house over time.
