Established in 1992, the Demarco European Art Foundation is a non-profit educational and cultural charity, registered in Scotland. The Foundation aims to develop and extend the work of the Richard Demarco Gallery (1966-1992) by maintaining and developing its extensive archives and by examining, fostering and presenting contemporary art archives.

The extensive collection comprises books and catalogues, writings, documents, film and audio recordings, art works and an archive of almost a million photographs, taken mostly by Richard Demarco himself as a photographic diary, recording his activities and observations over the past four decades. Such photographic documentation shows the work of internationally distinguished artists such as Joseph Beuys and Tadeusz Kantor amongst others.

“I do have an anxiety about the Demarco archive because it has outgrown its current location and I have yet to find a new home for it where it will be accessible and so allow people to learn, not just about the impact the international art world had has on Scotland, but also Scotland’s impact on the international art world”[Richard Demarco]

The focus of the building is therefore galleries to put archive material on public display in addition to visiting exhibitions and studio spaces for resident artists.
