“Up-there”: Almshouses as a city function Part 1 Project 2016 Oliver Martin University of Portsmouth | UK The UK has an ageing population, with the amount of people aged 85+ expecting to double by 2033. The preserved city of Winchester will also experience this demographic shift and although the presence of elderly almshouses within the city centre is high, they contribute little to the urban fabric of today. “Up-there” aims to harmonise the qualities of the current almshouses with the vibrant life of Winchester’s streets.
