Surface and Depth, Material Culture – Carlisle Pier Part 2 Project 2017 Aoife Burke University College Dublin | Ireland Now abandoned Carlisle Pier, Dun Laoghaire, Dublin, was once significant as the Mailboat Pier and the gateway through which many Irish emigrated to the UK. The port has always been for people rather than cargo so a new public space is proposed. Sensitive of this history, the public pier is composed of surface – a garden in the splash zone, and depth – an intertidal underworld which washes away at high tide.
