Island Commons Part 1 Project 2018 Rebecca Kalbfell London Metropolitan University | UK In their current state the abandoned buildings of the old town are impenetrable, visually and physically. Creating usable campus spaces requires a break in the defensive stone vernacular. The Island Commons proposes a new structural frame within the existing skin of the hollowed out buildings, retaining Belmonte Calabro’s historic character at a picturesque distance, but when experienced close up, the defensive hull is breached and activity within is exposed.
