Rethinking Recycling: A Crafting Framework Part 1 Project 2019 Lili Wagner Cardiff University | UK This project places a metal recycling centre at the heart of the city of Cardiff. Coupling plug-in, individual maker units with a new, public route through seeks to apply ideas of urban use and scale with sociologist Richard Sennett’s ideas of the Open City as a place for unexpected encounters. The exchange of, crafting and recycling of materials serves as a tool to amplify existing yet currently undervalued relationships between manufacturers and small-scale makers. The scheme advocated reinforcing the acquisition of skill within the workforce and introducing a circular, more sustainable lifecycle of materials.Building on the existing porosity of the site, the project aims to embed a new porous layer into the existing urban fabric, which mediates between the scales of material, people and infrastructure, by creating permeable and ambiguous borders between them.
