Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) is often thought to only produce rectilinear designs. The Mass Appeal studio challenged a group of 16 students address this preconception by designing a versatile panel system capable of generating a wide variety of configurations and formal outcomes. The students - few of whom had any construction experience - were asked to build a series of pavilions using CLT left over from a construction project nearby, with the dimensions of 2.3m x 10.7m x 6.4cm and weighing 680 kg.

Though design began individually, the studio gradually shifted into small groups to focus on four separate panel systems, then becoming one team to develop the preferred system. Without large scale milling or lifting equipment available, the panels had to be manually cut and moved, demanding a carefully designed construction process and exceptional teamwork. An elaborate set of removable scaffolding was designed so each pavilion could be erected in series, taking only four hours for each to be assembled.

Located outside the architecture school in the center of campus, the pavilions are an unexpected moment to enjoy while educating students, faculty and the public alike on the capability and sustainability of mass timber.
