The Social Void Part 2 Project 2019 Iame Lopes Kingston University Kingston | UK In the first semester I researched on J.G Ballard’s novel Concrete Island, who constructed scenarios in which I could discuss the potential trajectory of political agendas, commercial behaviour and social norms of their time. Then I travelled to São Paulo, to see the work of the Paulista School, which rejected the Modernism of the Northern hemisphere. These architects proposed a language distinct to their country, their continent and their future. They concerned themselves with the social, political, economic and technological aspects of a society in that place, and at that time. This ‘fish out of water’ experience of a different type of architecture and urban collective was the focus for the rest of year. This design project represents a clear line of investigation and the diligent pursuit of an idea from the novel Concrete Island, through the lens of the Paulista movement’s ideologies. It is a manifesto against London’s recent commercial development and the lack of social space and interaction that affords. It creates an architectural language that contravenes political pressure in which the architect reclaims her purpose in society. Tutor(s) Tom Coward Simon Henley
