Mixed Company: The Oasis Part 1 Project 2019 Conner Payne University of Arkansas | USA The Oasis springs from an investigation of the relationship between building massing and public space inspired by the Smithsons’ design for the Economist Building. To extend the public realm into and through the heart of the project, space is sculpted in the interior of the given cubic volume to transform the figure-ground diagram. A branching, multi-story void breaks down the given massing and generates a dynamic array of office plans to serve the varying needs of a flexible workforce. Daylight is drawn into the project by way of this figural void, allowing diffuse light to play across the surfaces of the interior facades and illuminate several outdoor terraces. The outer façade is treated with an array of vertical louvers to control light and heat and create a monolithic appearance from the street, while interior facades remain fully transparent to draw the user’s gaze across the void to the activities within.
