Forum For Bath Part 1 Project 2019 Jason SimMatthew RobertsWill Rook University of Bath | UK Set against the backdrop of the technological advance and societal progress we envisage will be achieved by 2038, Forum for Bath provides a grandstand to Bath Rugby’s new stadium and a vibrant hub for creative enterprise, whilst being designed to weave seamlessly into the network of public spaces and landscape features that comprise the World Heritage city of Bath. The scheme’s concept was inspired by the original intent of John Wood the Elder’s unbuilt Royal Forum of 1749, a colossal edifice that embraced the River Avon at a time when much of the city was architecturally introspective and neglectful of its riverfront presence. Bath’s city-river relationship has further deteriorated since the time of John Wood, our scheme intends to reverse this trend and set a new precedent for the positive interactions possible between the city and river.Working as an inter-disciplinary team of architecture and engineering students provided a series of unique challenges and opportunities, the greatest success of such collaborative working being demonstrated by the symbiosis of architectural narrative and efficient engineering within the proposal’s most prominent and unifying feature, a glass-fibre reinforced polymer roof structure.
