Ariadne’s Journey

Part 2 Project 2019
James Thomas
Arts University Bournemouth | UK
Ariadne’s Journey explores the theories and structures of the labyrinth. Originally a structure conceived as a component for disorientation, this interpretation privileges the feeling of getting lost allowing a person to meander and explore what Bournemouth has to offer.

The central element of the project - and its derivation - is the old Odeon Cinema which in recent years has fallen into disrepair. This building is synonymous with the artistic history of Bournemouth and is now the location for a gallery and co-working space. Influenced by the artistic and collaborative nature of university this space seeks to produce an environment where artists, designers and architects can create, experiment, discuss and exhibit. The hope is to provide entrepreneurs with a space to showcase there work and continue there journey into the creative world.

Hidden below this practicality is the labyrinth, a underground gallery that takes a person on a journey through sound and sight. Without the necessity of functionality, these spaces this purposefully disorientates the guest in an attempts to entice an emotional connection.
