Chamber of the Chthonic Creature Part 1 Project 2019 Isaac Palmiere-Szabo De Montfort University | UK The Political and Public debating space rises from underneath the landscape of Franckepark, (Alt-Tempelhof, Berlin) like a Chthonic Creature… forming a Political Centre, Kulture Forum, Public Park and Residential Apartments. This creature of the underworld manifests itself within the publics rising distrust in Western Governments increasingly fascist, and corrupt nature. It is designed to create a distorted, abstract and fluid space as a canvas for the theatrics inside. The publicly owned apartments create a permanent secondary internal audience, for the politicians to perform to.A duality is created in transitioning from the undulating rooftop, serving as a public park, to descending into the cave-like Political and Cultural stage. It is a similar experience to descending from the rooftop ‘Pleasure Gardens’ to the underground industry in the German Expressionist Film ‘Metropolis’ (Fritz Lang, 1927).Through a process of removing a Nazi-Built Town hall, previously dividing the site, and using Tempelhof’s rich history with the German Expressionist film industry in the 1920’s, I have replaced the political functions I removed in the form of a political campus; and used German Expressionist themes and symbolism as a vehicle to create a relevant architectural language, to tell its story.
