Collective Housing in Bucharest Part 1 Project 2019 Oana-Maria IlieAndreea-Gabriela Vladuca Ion Mincu University of Architecture and Urbanism | Romania The site of our project is adjacent to a main boulevard in Bucharest, in a historical protected area with several needs: better designed public spaces, more green spaces, shifting car transportation to more eco-friendly means of transport, etc. The main features of this urban fabric are the fragmented general layout, the varied height regime, the lack of homogeneity and the strong presence of inadequately designed buildings that contradicts the overall character. Our proposal deals with the above problems in order to create the much needed public spaces, to articulate the street front and to provide a mix of individual and collective units. An old house with architectural value that is located on the site was restored and integrated in the general layout. The transition between public spaces and private ones is made through different types of courtyards. We propose a wide array of dwelling types particular to the position on the site such as individual units on the ground floor or last floor duplex apartments. The design took into consideration the mitigation of several aspects like the particular relationships between lateral limits and cardinal points. This is made through vegetation, buffer areas and the overall configuration of the height of the buildings which are positioned in a way that each one is optimally lit by the sun. In addition to this, we emphasised the fragmented layout by designing a cascade of terraces through which the apartments are lit and ventilated and positioned the living rooms to the south or south-west.
