A Multigenerational Ceramics College Part 1 Project 2019 Susannah Hudson Sheffield Hallam University | UK The focus of the brief was to design a further education building for Newcastle college. The project outcome is a multigenerational ceramics college situated in the centre of the city. The proposal re-uses the structure of an existing building which was once home to Worswick Street bus station. Re-using the structure lead to a simple but extremely thoughtful proposal which places sustainability at the forefront. The decision to keep the structure also follows a strong social ambition, to ensure the structure remains part of the urban landscape. The material and tectonic aspects are driven by the use of local materials to minimise carbon impact. The spatial layout responds to the importance of daylight and natural ventilation within learning environments. The proposal changes the way we think about colleges as a space for young students, by opening it up to the wider community. This is encouraged through the buildings strong connection with the street, providing a public route directly through the centre to an open, public green space. Tutor(s) Rosie Dodgson
