The Annexe

Part 1 Project 2020

The Annexe establishes an active interface between the Goods Line and the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney, forming a spiritual extension of this institution and increasing its engagement with the community. The Powerhouse Museum has long been a staple in Ultimo’s history as well as a vital part of the community’s cultural and technological identity. The Annexe amplifies the significance of the institution and promotes a personal connection to the artistic and innovative people of Sydney.

Rather than imposing a significant intervention on site, the design creates new urban connections and functional space through subtle manipulation of the ground, thus preserving the optical freedom along the Goods Line and the industrial identity of the façade of the Hardwood Building tram shed. As a result, only the Northern Entrance is visible above ground, acting as a point of navigation.

The scheme creates a collection of spaces that are supplementary to the established Museum. Dedicated learning spaces and a maker’s studio promotes community engagement with workshops and casual courses. New gathering spaces bring a public connection to the institution. A slice of the historical tram shed is transformed into an exhilarating, flexible hall, seductively drawing people into the museum.
