The Garden Network Part 1 Project 2020 Charlotte Ronsman-King Queen's University Belfast | UK The Garden Network proposes to develop an ecological and social web through the town of Newcastle, County Down. Urban gardens play an integral role in the connecting of ecologies through towns and cities and are often undervalued. The open gardens initiative aims to promote the value of private outdoor space and encourage the sharing of gardens, a theme which has become particularly pertinent during a time of global pandemic. The project also proposes a seed bank and laboratory which will act as the hub for the initiative, a place of interest and a new landmark for the community. It will contain all the natural species of flora and fauna found in both the rural and urban context of Northern Ireland and will pay particular attention to the species at greater risk from climate change. The architecture is a platform to celebrate the plant species held within the bank through a series of roof gardens and courtyards. This aims to educate the community about the vulnerability of the area and represent the importance of safeguarding its future. Tutor(s) Nuala Flood Laurence Lord
