A Library of Performances Part 1 Project 2020 Samuel Kumar Liverpool John Moores University Liverpool | UK A new type of theatre: one that is transparent and open to the visitor, encouraging exploration, and promoting new performers. The building consists of a range of different performance spaces, varying in form, size, and intimacy. These spaces are intended for use by members of the public, providing a space and platform for directors, musicians, and students to showcase and rehearse their work. This constant array of differing productions allows the visitor to browse the performances available, before deciding on which piece they wish to view. Similar to a library, the ritual of browsing becomes significant, engaging the public through their exploration and discovery of the performers within.Working in tandem with the public theatre, the scheme also features a school for performing arts; a building intended to host, educate, and showcase the young performers of Liverpool. The school intends to aid the creation of high calibre and experimental dance, through carefully considered dance studio spaces. The complex becomes a holistic centre for performance, focusing on availability rather than exclusivity. This creates a new typology of theatre; a library that accumulates not books and journals, but performances and choreography. Tutor(s) Gary Brown
