Decoding Natural Algorithms Part 1 Project 2020 Sarah Asif Heriot Watt University - Dubai Campus | UAE Architecture should lead us to a unique process that serves as the symbiotic link between us and the existing word; just as the fragile coral ecosystem that serves as the unseen link between the oceanic ecosystem and ours. This project began by exploring the spatial adaptation of the coral against the bleaching crisis. This led to formulating disruptive patterns on the site to understand the existing order and begin overlaying a new ordering system that disrupts and spans across Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai. One of the aims of the project is to develop a generative behavior one that imitates the functioning of life itself. For this, Conway's game of life algorithm that celebrates the notions of birth, survival and death are experimented with, to iterate different massing’s that lead to the articulation of the project. The massings of these are manipulated by the disruptive agents of the site identified during the study. The project articulated with discrete units lead to translating the attributes of the crisis; Mutant, Symbiotic, and Disruption; each possessing unique spatial attributes. The manifestation is a Hospice and Stem Cell Research Centre, which disrupts, interconnects, and overlays the existing order of Sheikh Zayed Road. Sarah Asif Tutor(s) Alida Bata
