Factory for Artists Part 1 Project 2020 Clara-Romana Pop Nottingham Trent University | UK Factory for artists: an embodiment of Sheffield’s identity which is recognized as the ‘City of Makers’. The idea in itself is a paradox that strives to clash together the principles behind the two industries that mark the character of Sheffield: the past, Steel industry and the present, Creative Industry are merged together to create ‘The Heart of the City’, a part of the urban fabric. The rigid steel structure acting as the skeleton of the building hosts a bundle of creative activities that attract people and give life to the structure. The building can be identified as a reinterpretation of an art gallery, where the artistic process becomes the exhibit displayed. The spaces within are programmed to not only nurture the creative act but also encourage engagement and collaboration between the artists and the public, offering a sense of belonging. What defines the spatial configuration are the pods that act as studios that open towards the spaces in between, which become places to dwell, places characterised by togetherness.
