Having first undertaken an in-depth study of the city of Gdansk, its tumultuous past and scarred urban environment, the studio explored a series of interventions set within the vast wasteland that currently separates the former historic shipyards from the city centre, while respecting the local authority’s ambitions for the city’s regeneration. The office format enabled discussions throughout the year around architectural character, the importance of preservation versus the ambition of economic growth and our shared ambition of environmental sustainability. This extended into the individual sites and how they would relate to one other through the use of material, massing, and their relationship to the historic context. Gateways - a feature prominent throughout the city centre are used to connect to the wider city context. Despite the difficulties of remote working towards the end of the year, maintaining the office environment gave a taste of working life after graduation. Regular Teams meetings ensured we all remained on the same path which allowed everyone to discuss the individual proposals and their impact on the proposed masterplan.
