The Unknown Institute

Part 2 Project 2020
Benjamin Mundin
University of Huddersfield | UK
The Unknown Institute is an establishment which promotes exploration and development of an unprecedented unknown field, in which public and private engagements of the sector can take place and be documented. The unknown field is part of a larger architectural psychogeography theory which uses the ideas of both Lefebvre and Soja’s spatial triad and proposes an overarching theory of known spaces and unknown spaces.

The institute itself creates a centre for public and private engagement whilst observation, investigation and development can occur alongside. In short it’s an exploration centre in which utilises one of Huddersfields monolithic derelict pieces of “architecture” which has stood present on the central ring road for over 5 decades. The Unknown Institute brings Huddersfield to the forefront of technological and scientific advancement. The proposal utilises the existing architectural forms of the existing and produces unique yet radical forms on an architectural scale to what complement yet contrast to the existing townscape of Huddersfield. The centre itself takes on the premise of an icon, a landmark of sorts, whilst forming the sense of intrigue and questioning that this institute promotes.
