Chambers of Commerce - A New Modern Classical Building for the City of Glasgow Part 2 Project 2020 Anthony Fitheoglou Kingston University Kingston | UK The scheme seeks to respond to the Blythswood regeneration framework of Glasgow for higher- density by creating a 'New Modern Classical Building' through the application of the classical language.By studying classical buildings of the modern age located in London, New York, Washington DC and Glasgow, the design and development of the buildings façades were informed by a series of analytical observations and surveys. With little open or public space within the city grid of Glasgow, the prominent position, moreover, the existing condition of the site offered a unique opportunity to provide a large public plaza thus becoming a threshold to the new building. The plaza, tightly flanked by the surrounding buildings, presents an unconventional position to view both the buildings façade and the historic buildings within its contextual surroundings. As a result, the free-standing building ensures its composition asserts its presence with its unique façades by responding not only to its immediate context but also the wider urban fabric of Glasgow thus becoming a significant architectural contribution to the city.
