Temple of Antithesis

Part 1 Project 2021

Can any of us really change? There is now very little doubt that as a species humans are having a negative and destructive effect on the planet that supports all known life.

The brief for this project was to create a Temple of Antithesis on a seafront site on Blackpool's North Shore. The word 'temple' has many connotations, sacred space, space to reflect, give praise or worship, to educate or even indoctrinate depending on individual perspective.

Our belief systems satisfy many needs of our society, both spiritual and practical, and they help guide human behaviours. Of the many human behaviours that would benefit from adaptation, perhaps the most pressing is our misuse of the planet's resources leaving the Earth unprotected against the effects of climate change. We have all seen an image or footage of floods, wildfires, decimated rain forests, plastics in the ocean or other climate influenced events that has had a profound effect on our views.

It is with this in mind that the 'Temple of Antithesis' was born and its design aims to not just educate but to engage all the senses and show the effects of our actions, all with the aim of eliciting change.
