Tightening the Green Belt: Oakwood Mews, Enfield Part 1 Project 2022 Joe Robert Russell Bartlett School of Architecture (UCL) | UK Sited at the very point where cityscape turns to countryside in Enfield, Greater London, this project positions itself within the controversy of Green Belt policy. The policy, implemented to prevent urban sprawl, has been voiced by many as a vital strategy to protect open space whilst others argue it is a major contributor to the London housing crisis. Through analysis of the differing positions, the project aims to propose a ‘right way’ to build within the Metropolitan Green Belt. The building takes the form of a housing scheme and community centre and adopts a hyper-localised approach to material sourcing. Through the combination of salvaging and harvesting materials, the building finds justification in both the social and environmental benefit of its construction.
