Melton Mowbray: A Manufactured Spa Town Part 1 Project 2022 Gemmie Wimolrat Poolsiri De Montfort University | UK Historically, European Spa Towns require a combination of natural resources, urban elements and facilities to be recognised as spa towns. This project is about rethinking the concept of a ‘spa town’ as a manufactured one through sensory displacement as a critical component. The way we relax has changed with the intrusion of the internet and mobile phones. The internet acts as a sensorial displacement as we use digital devices to relax digitally rather than physically. This proposal questions how a spa can be considered a cultural building in the context of a technological age. The sensory encounters are represented through spatial and bodily experiences using salt and sound - challenging the spa's sensory and infrastructural aspects. The participant is introduced to an environment where the senses are pushed and pulled in a non-habitual way. All these programmes contribute to create a manufactured spa town which can be a model beyond Melton Mowbray. Tutor(s) Selim Halulu John Neale
