Continuation through Contradiction - Extension to Faculty of Arts, University of Peradeniya Part 2 Project 2022 Sanduni Ruvindi Lenadora University of Moratuwa | Sri Lanka The position taken in this project is that history, and historical/cultural buildings need to be perceived with an understanding of its temporal and socio-political context it was built in, as well as its evolving process that has made certain implications to what the building, or cultural precinct represents today. The values and identity of the place are understood in the spatial behaviour of buildings in such a context rather than seeing them as mere artefacts, as an alternative approach to the common contemporary practices in Sri Lanka. The project intends to explore the role of contemporary architecture in a historically and culturally significant context. For this exploration, the chosen context is the University of Peradeniya, a cultural precinct widely known for its scenic landscapes and characteristic architectural style. The current construction practices of replicating the existing architectural forms and building elements have imposed serious consequences to the place. The project intends to develop a dialogue between the old and new as a means of critiquing the historical evolution and current approaches in designing within such precincts, while responding to the contemporary and future needs.
