Body + Soul Part 2 Project 2022 Connor Kennedy University of Salford Salford | UK Body + Soul was conceptualised to delve deep into the socio-economic issues found within Salford and tried to propose a building which would house the needs of all social classes in the area, merging communities and improving people’s lives. To do so I created a building which preserved a historical façade retaining cultural value on Chapel Street, created therapy spaces for people’s mental health, fitness spaces for people’s physical health and well-being spaces or people’s spiritual health, whilst also introducing public realms, cafes and spectator zones encouraging social interaction and the merging of people from all walks of life. The tectonic expression of the building is formed by clever spatial planning and its broad use of material palettes, the proximity of Salford Cathedral influenced to positioning of social and therapy spaces whilst the use of stone, red brick and timber created a architectural aesthetic both contemporary, subtle and iconic.
