Flotsam unto Architecture: Museum of Water, Rotterdam, NL Part 1 Project 2023 Aaron William Barrett Sheffield Hallam University | UK Respect and sensitivity for cultural heritage; placemaking, socio-economic transmutability across shifting political boundaries, and sustainable developmental responsibilities encourage a forward-thinking architectural concept. The proposal responds by interviewing people on site, sketching ‘City Site and Place’ through serial-vision on-foot exploration, poetic extrapolation of strategic objective in advancing socially responsive sustainable outcomes, and IESvE building performance optimization in daylight, ventilation and thermal performance. To achieve a cohesive narrative, the theme of water across time is used as the narrative device. In addition, materiality, tectonic, urban legibility, virtual and physical dimensional relationships, and integrated indoor-outdoor spatial language are explored and developed. Informed by changing positions, advancing standards and a greater expectation that architecture will respond to sustainable, socio-political and cultural climates, the proposal uses CBE Operative Psychometric analysis, UN-SDG and UNESCO frameworks, and CIBSE standards to inform the strategic objective, rationale and methodology.A vocabulary of equitable, honourable, and responsible design for people and place maintains from concept to completion. As you onward flow, Without wings, care or knowledge; O’ how long a beach might delight; By that ebbing sea, On our curling sands, You wash upon this land; And we scavenge with our hands; To make our cities Stand.Flotsam unto Architecture Tutor(s) Oliver Cunningham
