Situated Interventions Part 1 Project 2023 Kieran Ward Northumbria University Newcastle | UK This project proposes a series of nomadic, interim, lightweight, and wholly reversible architectural interventions in the abandoned Wallsend Shipyard of Newcastle Upon-Tyne. Prodding at uncomfortable realities, situated interventions question what our collective memory of the city actually is, suggesting that the passed down romantic notions of the river Tyne and its shipbuilding heritage are fading and being replaced in the contemporary imagination by the true identity and hedonistic culture of Newcastle. This is not a moment of nostalgia. This is not an opportunity to glorify the collective memory. This is a moment to do something meaningful with temporary architecture in a peripheral industrial site before its inevitable long-term ‘transformation’ by commercial developers.
