Synthetic Geology

Part 1 Project 2023
Jack Jones
Arts University Bournemouth | UK
Empowered by knowledge, we possess a greater capacity to address the climate crisis by understanding our impact and seeking solutions to the problem. As a significant component of a broader urban strategy ‘Synthetic Geology’, aimed at enriching the thriving student hub of Lansdown, the Cornerstone university campus will emerge as the vibrant core of the site—a hub of innovation and material exploration with a strong emphasis on research, development, and testing.

At the heart of the campus, an impressive exhibition hall resides within the stone podium. It showcases examples of sustainable designs that have proven ineffective, serving as an educational platform to raise awareness among university students and visitors to the public spaces integrated throughout the urban strategy. The purpose of this space is to foster a deeper understanding of sustainable practices and their potential impact on our environment.

Cornerstone campus will be a pioneering research and development institute with a focus on material design and construction methods which improve whole life carbon emissions of future buildings. The building itself is expressed materially using load bearing, locally sourced stone for the podium base and timber for the towers above.
