Belfast Interrotta: A Luthier’s Workshop and House Part 1 Project 2023 Lars Pedersen Ulster University | UK The physical landscape of Belfast can be challenging. The city’s environment and its people have suffered so much as a result of “The Troubles”. This site encapsulates the impact which that conflict has had on the architectural heritage of Belfast. But there is now hope - a new beginning. Just as the architects of Roma Interrotta seized an opportunity to revert to Nolli’s Map of Rome and present their remedy for the insensitive post-modern intrusions on that landscape, my intention is to interrupt that period of “The Troubles”, and create a three dimensional and tactile environment on this site which will improve the quality of life of those who use and interact with my building, and to capture the genius loci of what it is to be “Belfast Made”. Having met Dermott and his family; having experienced their dedicated craftmanship; having witness the world class quality of their toil, I was more committed than ever to imagine the possible. I have tried to design from the inside out; to create a holistic environment that is not only conscious of function, adjacency, firmness, and delight, but one that acknowledges scale, materiality, sustainability, and inclusiveness.
