Tung Chung Botanic Library Part 1 Project 2023 Jess Xinyue Zhang Chinese University of Hong Kong | China The Tung Chung Botanic Library is a plant-themed library adapted from a series of village houses integrated within a greenhouse. While books and specimens are stored within houses, people are encouraged to have closer interaction with living plants when reading and resting in the greenhouse area. Incorporated in the course project The Social Condensor, this library project aims to create a welcoming public space that provides basic infrastructural services for expanded urban population, triggers interpersonal communication and helps to enrich the city image of Tung Chung New Town. Different from the vast urban district in Hong Kong, Tung Chung holds its unique temperament for being embraced by well-conserved forest natural habitats. Such intimacy between Tung Chung New Town and the nature as well as the plant biodiversity here thus becomes a powerful and interesting perspective of understanding the urban identity. As a conversion project, it is also an exploratory design that discusses about alternative intervention methods in the face of ongoing urban metabolism. Tutor(s) Ricky Suen Wai Kuen
