Shaping Simply: The Canal Food Dock Part 1 Project 2023 Jack Kerr Mackintosh School of Architecture | UK The Canal Food Dock is a proposal for an alternative City-Food relationship that seeks to move away from the current community stifling and profit driven models of modern supermarkets to community serving spaces which celebrate food, human-centered process and production.Located in Glasgow along the Forth and Clyde Canal, the project explores the potential of the existing canal network and imagines a new post-industrial identity of the canal as a place for local communities to gather, exchange and learn. The Architecture is one of Reduction: a structural, spatial and functional exploration into designing an innovative and lean building typology. The resulting structure is one of democratized space, inclusion, playfulness and diversity, with clear visual references to both industrial heritage and subtle references to the site’s history and local culture. The form that takes shape from function is a celebration of program, while keeping the structure autonomous and adaptable. The Timber frame provides a sustainable structural solution and its stability through perimeter bracing enables a reconfigurable and open space for future uses and generations. The operational energy of the building is partly met through on-site energy production from solar panels and BIO-GAS Digesters, and buildings shape and orientation facilitate passive ventilation and heating.
