Part 2 Project 2023

The project brief is to create a carbon-positive mental health hub. The proposed Wellness Centre is located on the southwest bank of Lake Windermere, set within the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Lake District National Park. The Lake District has been renowned for centuries for its health-improving properties, so the aim of the centre is designed to benefit the lives of local people struggling with mental health problems.

It is suggested that 1 in 4 people in the UK will have some sort of mental health problem each year, according to
Mind UK. These problems impact people’s lives and affect potential employment.

Accessing services in rural areas is even more challenging as these can be difficult to get to, as they are spread across a large geographical area. The awareness of these services can also be overlooked and further hinder rural communities needing help.

To address some of these issues, the mental health hub proposal on Site A will provide a meeting place, online and face-to-face counseling services along with arts/crafts therapy areas and organized rural pursuits. Site B contains a series of residential pods to enable the longer-term treatment of those most at risk.
