The city of cape Coral, Florida, has been hit by 6 hurricanes within its short 60 year life span. The most recent Hurricane Ian being the most destructive, submerged the city in 12ft of storm surge floodwater and caused 150mph winds to rip rooftops off buildings. The effects of the hurricane are amplified by the large proportion of elderly residents in the city.

The project program aims to help the elderly before, during and after a hurricane. The foundation acts as a social gathering hub for the elderly prior to a hurricane and offers intergenerational workshops / Kitchens where the elderly can teach the young new skills, whilst reducing loneliness for the elderly. As a hurricane hits, the foundation enters lockdown mode, with the elderly sheltering in the communal accommodation block.

The sheltering residents have access to communal dining facilities to ensure they are not isolated during the hurricane. As the hurricane passes, the foundation enters after care mode by offering support groups. The canal dock is activated to distribute food from the kitchens directly to the elderly across the city.

The Elderly Foundation project looks to the future, where hurricanes are likely to increase in frequency and utilises future proof design methods to protect against future hurricane and climatic issues.
