Casa Sol de Mayo: A New Diplomatic and Cultural Centre for Uruguay in Rome Part 1 Project 2023 Piotr Hejdysz Cardiff University | UK Casa Sol de Mayo proposes a new diplomatic and cultural centre for Uruguay in Rome. The goal was to create a prominent and representative diplomatic space reflecting Uruguay's cultural heritage and successful green transformation. Located on a residual site at the south-east of the Campo de' Fiori the project fills the gap in the fabric of this bustling 'urban room'.By opening up to the public via a Cafe and Art Centre the new embassy invites passers-by to engage with Uruguay. This feature creates an opportunity for diplomatic conversations between politicians, diplomats and everyday citizens. The central courtyard, adapted from the typology of Renaissance palazzi, connects the public and private programs of the embassy. The Embassy itself includes a range of rooms required for diplomatic buildings: a salon for events, conference rooms, offices for diplomats, and loggias on upper floors opening up to the courtyard and skyline of Rome. Moreover, the proposed design aims to serve as a platform for cultural, political, and diplomatic exchanges between Uruguay, Italy, and Europe. It aims to bring the Global South back to the 'big table' addressing pressing issues such as climate change and rising inequalities. Tutor(s) Tim Burton
