Organic Strip Strategy Part 2 Project 2023 Minh Le Uyen TranGilian Charisse FrondaBeatrice Kalyani RyanAndrea Nicole Casono University of Dundee | UK When a tropical storm surge as large as ‘Typhoon Yolanda’ hits a small city in a developing country like the Philippines, agriculture is the first sector to fall. From the extensive losses in farmlands, infrastructure and homes, the damage inflicted exposes the lack of resilience in the livelihoods of vulnerable communities, who are repeatedly impacted by these catastrophic events. Through agronomy, we propose a strategy which could potentially increase Tacloban’s resilience in the face of a natural disaster. Inspired by the “cluster farm” approach, the Organic Strip Strategy presents a powerful alliance between culturally sensitive design and nature. It tackles four areas from production to exportation: an integrated water impoundment providing irrigation for farming and consumption, with hybrid water stations generating renewable energy for the site. A community seedbank where both farmers and seed researchers work together, followed by a lifeboat project seeking to empower vulnerable women by means of agricultural livelihoods. Finally, located on the street level of the 4km strip, a reimagined marketplace reinforcing a secure food trade, encouraging social cohesion and ultimately preparing for abundance in Tacloban City. This concept promotes crop diversification, restores livelihoods and generates agritourism to help mitigate the impacts of future disasters. Tutor(s) Laurence Wood
