Fluid Lives Part 2 Project 2023 Christopher Jenkins Sheffield Hallam University | UK Set within Sheffield’s former Effingham Street gasworks, Fluid Lives represents a journey into the realm of an unmaintained world, an eventuality circa 2050. Here, amidst the convergence of botany, design, and architecture, we meet outside of the technical frame of sustainability and the familiar comforts of the bucolic. Fluid Lives evolved from a captivating observation of nature sprouting through dilapidated structures and downpipes and within the area. Through this lens, the exploration ventures into the essence of spontaneous nature, seeking to capture and celebrate these unanticipated expressions of natural growth that emerge within the urban fabric. Encompassing a brownfield site, the thesis illuminates a future where the remnants of a contaminated gasworks site metamorphose into a biodiverse wetland. A paradigm shift occurs: as animals and nature take centre stage, humanity assumes the role of a guest on this ground; observing from within the lodge retreats, exhibition spaces and along the network of boardwalks.
