The Quilt of Empowerment Part 1 Project 2024 Eve Balding University of Huddersfield | UK The pressing global issue of gender-based violence and the lack of adequate support for women demands deeper consideration. In 2022 alone, a staggering 48,800 women worldwide fell victim to homicide at the hands of male family members, an average of 133 women per day (UNODC,2022). These statistics not only underscore the gravity of the problem but also reveal the pervasive fear and anxiety that women endure in their daily lives, mourning the loss of friends, sisters, mothers, and daughters while grappling with their own safety concerns. In El Poblenou, residents have created a mural titled 'Feminicidis' to express grief and anger over these deaths. The mural, featuring purple tiles with the names and dates of female victims, underscores the ongoing nature of this issue, with half the mural still blank in anticipation of future victims as the issue remains unresolved.‘The Quilt of Empowerment’, a female sanctuary and empowerment centre, envisions a safe space for women from all backgrounds and walks of life, creating a community stitched together like the squares of a patchwork quilt. It strives to provide emergency accommodation, social spaces and workshop zones, aiming to integrate, not segregate, and ultimately create a harmonious community for all.
