What if one could experience all four seasons at once?

“The Weather Palace” imagines an alternative future for the Chatterley Whitfield Colliery where it is transformed into a seasonal village where the magic of all four seasons can be experienced simultaneously. Through technological advancements in the fields of climate engineering and weather control and utilising the colliery's existing deep shafts, abundant geothermal energy and stored methane, specifically-designed devices and innovative strategies are used to manipulate temperature, generate wind, and create rain or snow, effectively simulating any season at any time. The Colliery is transformed into a technological marvel that creates climatological experiences where winter, spring, summer, and autumn coexist.

“The Weather Palace” is not only a project about transforming the Chatterley Whitfield Colliery into a celebration of nature's cycles and the joy they bring, but also a project about the commodification and exploitation of the planet’s climate. While weather control and modification tactics can open countless environmental and climatic possibilities, “The Weather Palace” questions what this would mean for architecture and urban design, and the architect’s responsibility for how, when and for whose benefit it should be used.
