Blueprints of Memory: Artist Community Reassembling New Memories in Hastings explores the relationship between long-forgotten connections, memories, and their ties to the present.

My approach to the project focuses on designing a building in Hastings’ Old Town that cultivates community and promotes the creation of new social memories by reassembling lost pieces of the site’s architectural heritage, destroyed as part of an aggressive road-building programme in the 20th century.

The project leads visitors through six distinct areas, each designed to delve into a unique site aspect. These journeys are conceived to engender a sense of value in the familiar, through framing and bringing emphasis to daily rituals, and the role of senses in the remembering of a place.

The journey commences at the keykeeper's building, which also functions as a library. Visitors receive a key that must be kept with them at all times, after which they are free to explore the largest building on the site - the gallery.

The gallery exhibits ceramics, paintings and other works of varying scales and forms. The journey continues by choosing between two courtyards: a tranquil, isolated space or an open exhibition space. It then culminates in a secret garden adorned with birch trees and a gently flowing stream, crafted to echo memories of the Bourne water walk.
