Harnessing Velocity

Part 1 Project 2024

This project is situated within the precarious confines of a tier three flood zone, this project celebrates the direct response to the flooding crisis gripping Vauxhall Its primary objective is to honour and commemorate the rich local heritage housed within the archives of the former iron works, now rebranded as the Vauxhall Motor Company, while establishing a vibrant civic space. At the epicentre of the site lies the historical nexus where naval ships, pumps and engines were once meticulously crafted, this creates a profound connection to the overarching themes of flooding and water.

The design theology that I used to develop this project is known as the “kit of parts” I deconstructed a piece of machinery that Is planned to be archived by exploring forms as building spaces within the primary sightlines of the site determined by the evolving context. Most importantly the building itself was treated as a piece of evolving machinery with watermills and windmills to generate on site sustainable energy while having an onsite water treatment centre that gives back to the local grid. This was important because data shows the second biggest effect of flooding is drought, due to a lack of clean drinkable water.
