"Awakening Rural China" is a transformative project that enhances the potential of rural communities by revitalizing the hollowing monofunctional rural area into a vibrant mixed-use compound, focusing on the Nansongyan Village (Zhejiang, China) riverfront as a case study. The project aligns with the government’s plans to boost tourism through the village’s four-star national park and remaining heritage buildings, envisioning a future where culture, nature, and modernization coexist harmoniously. It aims to create a "home" for every generation in the community and visitors.

Utilizing approaches from the urban to landscape scale, the proposal integrates mixed-use functions, adaptive reuse, and open public space, deeply embedding the design within the local lifestyle and enhancing the environment in the Anthropocene Era. These schemes promote a pedestrian and cyclist-friendly community with new public spaces and enhanced river paths featuring local water vegetation. This fosters interaction with the previously polluted and inaccessible river, supporting wildlife and ecosystem growth. The adaptive reuse strategy addresses community needs without removing existing structures, preserving heritage buildings, a “sense of belonging,” and local identity. This approach maximizes underutilized buildings, increases their value, and enhances their conditions and performance, creating a vibrant, sustainable community that honors its past while embracing the future.
